  • EXO-420 Namaskar: Description
The EXO-R420 helmet continues to set a new standard for Scorpion EXO's full face street helmets

    Full-Face Motorcycle Helmets

Full-face helmets cover the head, face and chin with a fixed chin bar and, typically, a face shield. They offer enclosed coverage without a chin-bar hinge or locking mechanism. The tradeoff is less access to your lower face at stops because the chin bar cannot lift out of the way.

  • LS2 Advant X Solid modular helmet in matte black, view 9

    Modular Motorcycle Helmets

Modular helmets provide enclosed head, face and chin coverage when the chin bar and shield are closed. The chin bar opens for talking, drinking or getting air at stops without removing the helmet. That convenience adds hinges and a locking system. Weight, certifications and manufacturer-approved riding positions vary by model.

  • Open-Face Motorcycle Helmets

    Open-Face Motorcycle Helmets

Open-face helmets, also called three-quarter helmets, cover the top, back and sides of the head without a chin bar. They offer an open-face riding experience with more side and rear head coverage than a half helmet. A compatible face shield can help with wind, weather and debris, but does not provide the protection of a chin bar.

  • Rebellion Bones Half Helmet: SHELLMeets or exceeds DOT FMVSS 218

    Half-Shell Motorcycle Helmets

Half helmets cover the upper portion of the head, leaving more of the sides and back exposed than three-quarter helmets. They offer a minimal, open riding experience, with reduced head coverage and no chin bar as the tradeoff. Some models include or accept a shield; compare eye-protection options, fit, retention and communication-system compatibility.

The LS2 Advant X (FF901) is a modular motorcycle helmet with a chin bar that rotates a full 180 degrees to rest behind the head, so the same helmet can be ridden as either a full face or an open face. The shell is high performance fiberglass composite (HPFC) and the helmet weighs 1600 g plus or minus 50 g. It is certified to ECE 22.06, ECE P and J (dual open and full face homologation), and DOT FMVSS 218. Sizes run XS through 3XL across two shell sizes, and every helmet ships with a Pinlock 120XLT MaxVision insert, a dark smoke shield, and a carrying bag. What this helmet is built for The Advant X is aimed at riders who want one helmet for mixed use: closed up on the highway, opened up in traffic, at fuel stops, or on slow city miles. Because it carries both the ECE P (protective chin bar) and J (open face) ratings, it is legal to ride in either position rather than only for stopping. The tradeoff for that versatility is weight and cost: at roughly 3 lb 8 oz it is heavier than a comparable full face, and the rotating mechanism adds parts that a fixed-chin helmet does not have. Key features 180-degree rotating chin bar, certified for use in both positions High performance fiberglass composite (HPFC) shell, two shell sizes Multi-density EPS with internal ventilation channels Quick-release main shield with scratch-resistant and UV-resistant coatings Hidden internal drop-down sunshield with easy-remove mechanism Pinlock 120XLT MaxVision anti-fog insert included Adjustable chin and top intake vents with rear exhaust ports Laser-cut comfort liner: breathable, hypoallergenic, removable, washable Micrometric metal buckle with reinforced chin strap Emergency cheek pad release system for first responders Reflective safety patch and chin curtain Certification and construction Advant X shell and safety specifications Safety standards ECE 22.06 and DOT FMVSS 218. Different head shapes can require a slightly smaller or larger helmet in any given model, so trying on the specific model is always recommended. A helmet should be as snug as possible without being tight enough to cause a headache. Being fitted in person by a professional is the most reliable method. Measure the circumference of your head with a tape measure, or with a length of string that you then line up against a ruler. Start above the ear and circle all the way around, resting the tape about a half inch above the eyebrows and across the fullest part of the back of the head. Measure several times so you do not end up with a reading that is too small or too large. Compare your measurement to the size chart. If you fall between two sizes, take the larger size. Replacement parts and accessories The following Advant X components are sold separately. Note that some parts are shared with the Advant X Carbon but do not fit the standard Advant (FF906). Advant X replacement part numbers and available options Component Part number Options Cheek pads 04-471 XS to XL in black standard, black slim version 1, and black slim version 2 (shorter tabs) Liners 04-461 XS, S, M, L, XL, 2XL, 3XL Baseplates 05-050 Black. Fits Advant X and Advant X Carbon. Outer shields 04-428 Clear, dark smoke, photochromic, and dark electron iridium in silver, gold, red, blue, green, and black gold Pinlock inserts 04-478 Pinlock 120 XLT MaxVision insert Inner drop-down sunshields 04-468 Amber, clear, and dark smoke in version 1 and version 2. Fits Advant, Advant II, Advant X, and Advant X Carbon. Common questions Can the Advant X be ridden with the chin bar rotated back? Yes. It carries ECE P certification as a full face and ECE J certification as an open face, which means it is homologated for riding in either position rather than only for stopping. Does the Advant X come with a Pinlock insert? Yes. A Pinlock 120XLT MaxVision anti-fog insert is included in the box, along with a dark smoke shield and a carrying bag. Does it have an internal sun visor? Yes. A drop-down sunshield is built into the shell and operates from a hidden sliding button. It can be removed without tools using the easy-remove mechanism. How much does the Advant X weigh? 1600 g plus or minus 50 g, roughly 3 lb 8 oz. That is heavier than a typical fiberglass full face, which is the usual tradeoff for a modular chin bar mechanism. What size shell will I get? The Advant X uses two shells. Sizes XS through L share one shell, and XL through 3XL share the other, with five EPS densities and seven liner sizes spread across the range to keep proportions correct. Can I change the fit without changing helmet size? To a degree. Cheek pads are available in slim and standard thickness in three size groups, and the liner is sold separately in seven sizes, so the interior can be adjusted within a shell size. Do Advant X parts fit the standard Advant? Shields and Pinlock inserts do not. Advant X shields and inserts do not fit the Advant FF906, and Advant KPA shields do not fit the Advant X or Advant X Carbon. The inner drop-down sunshield is the exception and fits Advant, Advant II, Advant X, and Advant X Carbon. Before You Select a Size: Helmet-Fit Facts A helmet is one of the most important pieces of riding gear you will choose, and the size printed on the label is only a starting point. Head circumference, head shape, crown contact, cheek-pad pressure and the retention system all affect whether a helmet fits correctly. Two helmets marked the same size can fit very differently—even within the same brand. Measure around the widest part of your head, keeping the tape level and approximately one inch above your eyebrows. A new helmet should feel evenly snug around the entire head without sharp or painful pressure points. When you move the helmet gently from side to side, your skin should move with the liner rather than the helmet sliding independently. Fasten the retention system and confirm that the helmet cannot roll forward or lift off the head. Wear the helmet for several minutes before deciding. Comfort padding may settle with use, but an incorrect shell shape or painful pressure point is unlikely to be solved by choosing blindly. Why Come to Eagle Leather for a Helmet Fitting? Our staff is trained to help with helmet fitting and can help you compare head shape, size, pressure points and retention across different models. Inventory changes daily, but Eagle Leather consistently carries many hundreds of helmets—often approaching 1,000 units—across half-shell, open-face, modular, adventure and full-face styles. That selection gives you the opportunity to compare brands and internal shapes instead of relying on a size label alone. For such an important piece of riding gear, we encourage you to visit Eagle Leather for an in-person fitting before selecting a size without trying the helmet on.

  • New Arrival Shoei Neotec 3 matte black modular touring helmet side view Shoei motorcycle helmet size chart

    SHOEI Shoei Neotec 3 Solid

    1 review

    21 in stock

The Shoei Neotec 3 is a premium modular touring helmet engineered for riders who want full face protection, convenient flip up access, refined highway aerodynamics, strong ventilation, and seamless communication integration. Shoei developed the shell, chin bar, shield, sun visor, interior, and airflow system as one complete platform rather than treating the modular mechanism as an add on. What improved over the Neotec II The Neotec 3 is a genuine redesign rather than a cosmetic refresh. Shoei retained the familiar modular touring concept, then revised the systems that most directly affect visibility, airflow, wind management, everyday operation, and communication integration. New CNS 3C shield system: The Neotec II used the CNS 3 shield with side mounted operation. The Neotec 3 moves to a newly developed CNS 3C shield with a center locking tab. The new shape improves sealing around the eye port, reduces optical distortion, and allows balanced opening with either hand. Improved shield venting: The new shield mechanism includes a micro opening position that lets the rider introduce a controlled amount of airflow for defogging without opening the shield fully. Larger internal sun visor: The QSV 2 visor extends about 5 millimeters farther than the QSV 1 used in the Neotec II. This provides greater coverage and reduces distracting light entering below the visor. Upgraded ventilation: Shoei redesigned the closable brow and chin intakes, internal air channels, and rear extraction points to increase airflow. The chin intake also gains a removable insect filter that makes debris easier to clean out. Refined wind and noise management: The reshaped shell, improved shield seal, revised lower edge, and integrated spoiler work together to create cleaner airflow and better noise isolation than the previous generation. Helmet fit, motorcycle windscreen, and riding position will still affect the sound a rider experiences. New communication integration: The Neotec II was designed around the Sena SRL and SRL2. The Neotec 3 uses Shoei Comlink integration for the optional Sena SRL3, allowing the controls, speakers, microphone, and battery to fit neatly into the helmet with minimal external bulk. Updated chin strap hardware: A new stainless steel micro ratchet is lighter, smoother to operate, and designed to provide more consistent adjustment than the previous closure. Improved glove friendly operation: The flip up release, shield control, ventilation controls, and sun visor slider were shaped for easier use while wearing riding gloves. Weight comparison: The added refinement does not make the complete helmet lighter. Shoei lists the Neotec 3 at approximately 4.15 pounds in size Medium compared with approximately 4.09 pounds for the Neotec II. The difference is about one ounce. Refined modular system The chin bar opens with a large glove friendly release and rotates smoothly upward for fuel stops, conversations, and other stationary use. The locking mechanism uses durable metal components and is designed to close with a positive, reassuring engagement. Shell and impact management Advanced Integrated Matrix shell combines fiberglass and organic fibers Multi density EPS liner manages impact energy across different zones Emergency Quick Release System supports easier cheek pad removal by trained responders DOT approved for street use Wind tunnel developed aerodynamics The shell shape, chin bar, lower edge, and integrated spoiler were tested together in Shoei’s wind tunnel. The goal is balanced airflow, reduced lift, and stable tracking during long highway rides. Attention to sealing and lower edge turbulence also helps create a more controlled cockpit environment. Touring focused ventilation A closable chin intake directs air toward the shield area, while the upper intake moves cooling air through channels in the EPS liner. Rear exhaust outlets help release warm air. The front intake includes a removable insect filter for easier maintenance. CNS 3C shield system Optically accurate curvature helps reduce distortion Center locking tab creates even pressure against the eye port seal Micro opening position provides controlled airflow for defogging Tool free removal makes shield changes and cleaning easier Pinlock anti fog insert is included Blocks more than 99 percent of harmful ultraviolet light QSV 2 internal sun visor The internal sun visor provides about 5 millimeters more coverage than the prior generation. It deploys with a smooth external slider and retracts fully when not needed. Its dedicated storage space preserves protective EPS thickness around the forehead. Comfort and secure closure The three dimensional interior is removable, washable, and designed to support the head evenly. Replaceable cheek pads and center pads allow fit adjustment and long term refresh. A stainless steel micro ratchet closure gives riders fast, consistent adjustment while maintaining a secure connection. Shoei Comlink communication integration The shell is prepared for the optional Sena SRL3 system. This purpose built installation keeps the control unit, speakers, microphone, and battery neatly integrated with minimal external hardware. 6 in stock

The Shoei GT Air 3 is a premium full face touring helmet built for riders who want long distance comfort, quiet air management, integrated sun protection, and modern communication capability without giving up a sporty feel. Shoei refined nearly every major system from the previous GT Air 2, then validated the design in its in house wind tunnel. What changed from the GT Air 2 The reshaped shell and spoiler reduce aerodynamic drag while improving stability at highway speed. Shoei reports approximately 6 percent less wind resistance and 11 percent less lift than the GT Air 2. The ventilation system places the intake ports directly in the air stream and uses internal EPS channels to move fresh air through the helmet more effectively. The center locking shield system is easier to operate with either hand, and the internal sun visor provides about 5 millimeters more coverage. Shell and impact management Advanced Integrated Matrix shell combines fiberglass and organic fibers for strength with controlled elasticity Multi density EPS liner is tuned to manage impact energy across different areas of the helmet Emergency Quick Release System allows trained responders to remove the cheek pads more easily DOT approved for street use Aerodynamics and ventilation The compact shell shape, molded rear spoiler, and carefully controlled surface transitions were developed to reduce buffeting and lift in real riding positions. A large chin intake and upper intake feed air into channels molded through the EPS liner. Warm air exits through the rear exhaust system. The front vent includes a removable insect filter for easier cleaning. CNS 1C shield system Optically accurate shield design helps minimize distortion Blocks more than 99 percent of harmful ultraviolet light Center locking tab provides an even seal around the eye port Micro opening position allows controlled airflow when extra defogging is needed Tool free shield removal makes cleaning and replacement simple Pinlock EVO anti fog insert is included QSV 2 internal sun visor The enlarged internal sun visor offers about 5 millimeters more coverage than the prior design. It deploys with a smooth external slider and retracts fully into the shell when not needed. The visor is designed to preserve the helmet’s protective liner rather than reducing EPS thickness around the eye area. Comfort for long rides The removable and washable three dimensional interior uses moisture managing fabrics in high contact areas. Replaceable center pads and cheek pads allow fit tuning over the life of the helmet. A stainless steel micro ratchet closure provides secure, repeatable adjustment, while the 21 millimeter chin strap helps spread pressure comfortably. A breath guard and chin curtain help manage fog and lower edge turbulence. Its updated aerodynamic profile improves stability at speed, larger vent controls make airflow easier to adjust with gloves, and the renewed interior provides a softer, more comfortable feel for daily commutes and longer rides. What Has Improved Over the RF SR More refined aerodynamics: The revised shell shape is designed to reduce drag and lift compared with the previous model, helping the helmet feel more stable and less tiring at highway speeds. Better ventilation control: The familiar three intake and two exhaust vent layout now uses larger, easier to operate shutters. Partial open positions let riders fine tune airflow instead of choosing only fully open or fully closed. Updated interior comfort: The removable and washable 3D interior uses soft brushed fabric for a smoother feel against the skin. Optional cheek pads and center pads allow the fit to be adjusted more precisely. Current safety certification: The RF SR 2 meets Snell M2025D and DOT FMVSS No. 218 standards. Proven Features That Carry Forward AIM+ shell construction: Multiple layers of fiberglass and organic fibers provide a strong balance of impact performance, flexibility, and manageable weight. CWR 1 shield system: The optically clear shield works with the QR E base plate for quick shield changes and precise shield adjustment. Pinlock EVO lens included: The supplied DKS301 insert helps resist fogging in cold, damp, or changing riding conditions. Adjustable 3D interior: The center pad and cheek pads can be removed for washing or replaced with optional thicknesses to personalize the fit. Balanced road weight: Approximately 3.49 pounds or 1,593 grams in a medium solid color helmet. Made for Everyday Street Riding The RF SR 2 is designed for riders who want premium SHOEI construction without moving into a race focused or touring focused helmet. It is a strong choice for commuting, weekend rides, and extended highway travel, with practical improvements that make the helmet easier to live with on every ride. Specifications Helmet type: Full face street helmet Shell construction: AIM+ Advanced Integrated Matrix Plus multi fiber Ventilation: Three intake vents and two exhaust vents with adjustable shutters Shield: CWR 1 with QR E base plate system Included anti fog lens: Pinlock EVO DKS301 Interior: Adjustable, removable, and washable 3D comfort system Certifications: Snell M2025D and DOT FMVSS No. 218 Approximate weight: 3.49 pounds or 1,593 grams for size medium in a solid color

The LS2 Rebellion Half Helmet combines a timeless cruiser profile with modern comfort, protection, and convenience. Its lightweight Kinetic Polymer Alloy shell uses a roll off resistant design and multi density EPS to provide a secure, confidence inspiring fit without unnecessary bulk. An integrated two stage sunshield offers quick coverage when lighting conditions change. The shield is scratch resistant and UV resistant, while the removable peak lets riders customize the look and coverage. Adjustable multi port ventilation works with ported EPS to keep air moving, and the moisture wicking technical fabric liner removes easily for washing. Features Meets DOT FMVSS 218 Lightweight Kinetic Polymer Alloy shell Approximate weight of 948 grams, plus or minus 50 grams Two shell sizes for a more proportionate fit Multi density EPS impact liner Roll off resistant half helmet design Built in two stage drop down sunshield Scratch resistant and UV resistant sunshield Removable peak Fully adjustable multi port ventilation Removable and washable moisture wicking liner DOT approved quick release chin strap Includes carrying bag Sizing Measure around the widest part of the head, approximately one inch above the eyebrows. X Small: 53 to 54 cm Small: 55 to 56 cm Medium: 57 to 58 cm Large: 59 to 60 cm X Large: 61 to 62 cm 2X Large: 63 to 64 cm Before You Select a Size: Helmet-Fit Facts A helmet is one of the most important pieces of riding gear you will choose, and the size printed on the label is only a starting point.

    SHOEI Shoei RF-1400 Solid

    11 in stock

Shoei RF-1400 Solid Full-Face Motorcycle Helmet The Shoei RF-1400 brings premium full-face protection, carefully developed aerodynamics and long-ride comfort to sport riding, commuting and touring. Its compact shape and adjustable ventilation make it a versatile choice for riders who want a refined road helmet with a clear, secure shield and a supportive, customizable interior. Shell Construction and Protection Shoei's AIM+ shell combines hand-laid fiberglass with organic and high-performance fibers. Inside, a dual-layer, multi-density EPS liner manages impact energy while incorporating channels for cooling airflow. Four shell sizes help keep the helmet proportionate across the size range. The U.S. RF-1400 is DOT compliant and Snell certified. E.Q.R.S. emergency cheek pad removal helps trained responders remove the helmet when necessary. Research, Aerodynamics and Noise Control Shoei developed the RF-1400 through extensive testing in its own wind tunnel. The sculpted shell and integrated spoiler help manage airflow and helmet stability at road speeds. Shield-mounted vortex generators, a close-fitting shield seal, substantial cheek padding and removable ear pads work together to reduce wind noise. Comfort still depends on fit, riding position, motorcycle windscreen and road conditions. What Has Improved Over the RF-1200 More efficient aerodynamics: Shoei reports a 6% reduction in lift and a 4% reduction in drag in its testing compared with the RF-1200. Revised ventilation: Repositioned forehead vents, an additional intake opening and a larger rear exhaust help move cooling air through the helmet. Updated shield operation: The CWR-F2 shield uses a central locking mechanism and revised base plates for a secure seal and convenient opening. Wider anti-fog coverage: The Pinlock EVO lens provides a 10% larger field of vision than the previous system. Improved quietness: Updated window beading and fuller cheek pads help limit unwanted air and noise entering the helmet. CWR-F2 Shield and Pinlock EVO The clear CWR-F2 shield combines a two-dimensional outer surface with a three-dimensional inner profile for clear vision with minimal distortion, while filtering 99% of harmful UV rays. Its central lock and spring-loaded base plates pull the shield against the seal. A first-open position allows a small amount of extra airflow, and the quick-release system simplifies shield changes. An included Pinlock EVO anti-fog insert helps maintain visibility in cool or damp conditions when correctly installed. Use RF-1400-compatible CWR-F2 replacement shields and the corresponding insert. Optional tinted or photochromic shields are sold separately. Adjustable Ventilation Six intake openings and four exhaust outlets move air through the EPS channels. The three-position chin vent lets you adjust lower-face airflow, while upper vents and the rear exhaust help release heat. Controls allow you to adapt the airflow as conditions change. Comfort, Fit and Communication The removable, washable and replaceable 3D Max-Dry System II interior wicks perspiration and dries quickly. Different cheek pad thicknesses allow fit refinement, and eyeglass channels help accommodate glasses. The liner and cheek pads should hold the helmet securely without painful pressure points. The Sena SRL-EXT communication system is specifically designed for the RF-1400 and is sold separately. Follow the communication manufacturer's installation instructions when fitting speakers, microphone and mounting hardware. Included Equipment Clear CWR-F2 face shield Pinlock EVO anti-fog insert Breath guard Chin curtain Size Chart and Measurement Measure around the widest part of your head, just above the eyebrows and ears, keeping the tape level. Use the chart as a starting point, then try the helmet on with the chin strap secured. It should feel snug all around and move your skin when gently rotated. Select the helmet size that is closest to your head measurement from the sizing guidelines above. If your head measurement falls between two helmet sizes, first try on the smaller of the two helmets. THE PERFECT FIT No helmet can protect the wearer against all unforeseeable high- and low-speed impacts. However, to help maximize head protection, the helmet must fit properly, and the retention system must be securely fastened under the chin. Failure to ride with a proper fitting helmet and securely fastened chinstrap is dangerous, as the helmet could come off during an accident, resulting in severe head trauma or death.

Different shapes of heads might require a slightly smaller or larger helmet in any given model. Trying on the model you are interested in is always recommended. A helmet should be as snug as possible, without being so tight that it will give you a headache. It’s best to be fitted by a professional. Size Centimeters Inches X-Small 53-54 cm 20 7/8 - 21 1/4 Small 55-56 cm 21 5/8 - 22 7/8 Medium 57-58 cm 22 1/2 - 22 7/8 Large 59-60 cm 23 1/4 - 23 5/8 X-Large 61-62 cm 24 - 24 3/8 2X-Large 63-64 cm 24 3/4 - 25 1/4 3X-Large 64-65 cm 25 5/8 - 26 4X-Large 66-67 cm 26 3/8 - 26 3/4 Before You Select a Size: Helmet-Fit Facts A helmet is one of the most important pieces of riding gear you will choose, and the size printed on the label is only a starting point.

Shoei GT-Air 3 Solid: The SHOEI GT-Air 3 combines modern design, advanced protection, and all-day comfort for touring riders

How to Choose a Motorcycle Helmet

The right motorcycle helmet starts with proper fit—not simply the size printed on the label. Head shape, even pressure around the crown, cheek-pad contact, and the retention system all affect how securely and comfortably a helmet fits.

Eagle Leather stocks full-face, modular, open-face, and half helmets for different riding styles, comfort preferences, and levels of coverage. Compare the certification, weight, ventilation, shield system, eyeglass compatibility, and communication-system accommodations listed for each model.

Choose the Right Helmet Style

Full-face helmets provide coverage around the entire head and include a fixed chin bar. They are popular for highway riding, commuting, sport riding, and changing weather conditions.

Modular helmets include a chin bar that lifts for added convenience during stops. Because weight, locking mechanisms, and permitted riding positions vary, compare the specifications of each model.

Open-face helmets cover the top, back, and sides of the head while leaving the face open. Many riders choose them for increased airflow and visibility.

Half helmets provide the least coverage and the most open riding experience, making them particularly popular with cruiser riders.

Proper Fit Matters

Use the manufacturer’s size chart as a starting point, but remember that two helmets marked the same size may fit differently. A new helmet should feel evenly snug without painful pressure points and should not rotate independently when you move it.

If possible, wear the helmet for several minutes before deciding. Comfort padding may settle somewhat with use, but a painful pressure point or incompatible internal shape is unlikely to correct itself.

Get Fitted at Eagle Leather

Eagle Leather is a real brick-and-mortar motorcycle gear store in Lakewood, Washington. We stock the helmets we sell, and our team can help you compare brands, sizes, internal shapes, and features in person. Trying several helmets side by side can make the difference between simply buying your size and finding a helmet that actually fits you properly.

Frequently Asked Questions About Motorcycle Helmets

Which motorcycle helmet style is right for me?

The right helmet style depends on your coverage and convenience preferences, along with proper fit. Full-face helmets provide enclosed head, face and chin coverage with a fixed chin bar. Modular helmets can cover those same areas when fully closed, with a chin bar that opens for convenience at stops. Open-face helmets cover the top, back and sides of the head without a chin bar. Half helmets cover the upper portion of the head with less side and rear coverage. Shield and eye-protection options vary by model. Compare each helmet’s fit, certification and features before choosing.

Is a modular helmet as safe as a full-face helmet?

Both modular and full-face helmets can meet recognized safety standards, but certification does not mean that every helmet provides identical protection. A full-face helmet has a fixed chin bar, while a modular helmet uses a hinged chin bar that opens for convenience when stopped. Construction, certification, fit, and features vary by model, so compare the specifications of each helmet rather than judging by helmet style alone.

Unless the helmet’s manufacturer specifically approves riding with the chin bar open, keep it fully closed and securely latched while riding. The right choice depends on your preferred balance of coverage, convenience, fit, weight, and features.

How do I choose the right motorcycle helmet size for my child?

Choose a youth helmet according to the child’s current head measurement and shape—not age or anticipated growth. Measure around the widest part of the head, approximately one inch above the eyebrows, and compare the measurement with the sizing chart for the specific helmet.

The helmet should feel evenly snug without painful pressure points. When you gently move it from side to side, the child’s skin should move with the liner instead of the helmet rotating independently. Fasten the chin strap and follow the manufacturer’s fit and retention checks to confirm that the helmet stays securely in place and cannot be rolled off the child’s head.

Do not purchase an oversized helmet to leave room for growth. A loose helmet can move out of position and may not provide its intended protection. Because fit varies between brands and models, we recommend bringing your child to Eagle Leather’s Lakewood store for an in-person fitting.

Can I replace the face shield on my helmet?

Many motorcycle helmets have replaceable face shields, but shields are not universally interchangeable, even within the same brand. Check the manufacturer’s compatibility information for your helmet’s exact model, generation and size, where applicable.

Replace a shield that is cracked, scratched or otherwise damaged, or has cloudiness or distortion that affects clear vision. If the shield or its mounting system does not attach and operate securely, stop using it until the problem has been corrected according to the manufacturer’s instructions.

Clear, tinted, mirrored and Pinlock-compatible options vary by helmet. Follow the manufacturer’s restrictions for the specific shield. Use clear eye protection at night or in poor visibility. Washington’s eye-protection rules prohibit tinted devices during the nighttime and low-visibility conditions specified in WAC 204-10-026(11).

If you are unsure which shield fits, bring your helmet to Eagle Leather’s Lakewood store. We can help check compatibility and explain the manufacturer’s removal and installation instructions.

What does DOT certification on a motorcycle helmet mean?

A DOT label means the helmet’s manufacturer certifies that the helmet complies with Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard No. 218, the U.S. standard covering requirements such as impact attenuation, penetration resistance, retention-system performance and labeling.

NHTSA does not test and approve each helmet before it is sold. Manufacturers certify their own helmets, while NHTSA tests selected helmets for compliance and can require corrective action or a recall when a helmet fails.

Some helmets also carry ECE or Snell certification. These standards use different testing and certification programs and can provide additional information when comparing helmets, but they do not replace the DOT certification required for motorcycle helmets sold for on-road use in the United States. Always check the certifications listed for the specific helmet, and remember that certification does not replace proper fit.

Is a motorcycle helmet required by law in Washington?

Yes. Washington generally requires motorcycle, motor-driven-cycle and moped operators and passengers to wear a motorcycle helmet on public roads. The helmet must carry the manufacturer’s certification that it complies with U.S. Department of Transportation requirements, and its neck or chin strap must be securely fastened while the vehicle is moving.

When operating one of these vehicles without a windshield, the operator must also wear qualifying glasses, goggles or a face shield. Washington law also prohibits transporting a child under five years old on a motorcycle or motor-driven cycle.

The helmet-use requirement has limited exceptions for certain enclosed vehicles and antique motor-driven cycles, as specified in the statute. Requirements can change, so consult RCW 46.37.530 for the current law. Helmet and eye-protection laws may differ when riding outside Washington.
