Motorcycle Helmet Categories
Full-Face Motorcycle Helmets
Maximum coverage. The chin bar protects the area that hits first in most crashes, and the sealed shield keeps out wind, rain, and debris. The default for commuting and highway miles.
Full-face protection with a chin bar that lifts. Talk, drink, or cool off at a stop without pulling the helmet. Slightly heavier, and worth it for touring and daily riding.
Three-quarter coverage with an open chin. Better airflow and visibility, and easier on and off. Best for cruisers and around-town riding at lower speeds.
Minimum coverage, maximum airflow. No chin bar and no shield, so pair with eye protection. Popular on cruisers for short rides in warm weather at lower speeds.
The right motorcycle helmet starts with proper fit—not simply the size printed on the label. Head shape, even pressure around the crown, cheek-pad contact, and the retention system all affect how securely and comfortably a helmet fits.
Eagle Leather stocks full-face, modular, open-face, and half helmets for different riding styles, comfort preferences, and levels of coverage. Compare the certification, weight, ventilation, shield system, eyeglass compatibility, and communication-system accommodations listed for each model.
Choose the Right Helmet Style
Full-face helmets provide coverage around the entire head and include a fixed chin bar. They are popular for highway riding, commuting, sport riding, and changing weather conditions.
Modular helmets include a chin bar that lifts for added convenience during stops. Because weight, locking mechanisms, and permitted riding positions vary, compare the specifications of each model.
Open-face helmets cover the top, back, and sides of the head while leaving the face open. Many riders choose them for increased airflow and visibility.
Half helmets provide the least coverage and the most open riding experience, making them particularly popular with cruiser riders.
Proper Fit Matters
Use the manufacturer’s size chart as a starting point, but remember that two helmets marked the same size may fit differently. A new helmet should feel evenly snug without painful pressure points and should not rotate independently when you move it.
If possible, wear the helmet for several minutes before deciding. Comfort padding may settle somewhat with use, but a painful pressure point or incompatible internal shape is unlikely to correct itself.

Before You Select a Size: Helmet-Fit Facts
A helmet is one of the most important pieces of riding gear you will choose, and the size printed on the label is only a starting point. Head circumference, head shape, crown contact, cheek-pad pressure and the retention system all affect whether a helmet fits correctly. Two helmets marked the same size can fit very differently—even within the same brand.
Measure around the widest part of your head, keeping the tape level and approximately one inch above your eyebrows.
A new helmet should feel evenly snug around the entire head without sharp or painful pressure points.
When you move the helmet gently from side to side, your skin should move with the liner rather than the helmet sliding independently.
Fasten the retention system and confirm that the helmet cannot roll forward or lift off the head.
Wear the helmet for several minutes before deciding. Comfort padding may settle with use, but an incorrect shell shape or painful pressure point is unlikely to be solved by choosing blindly.
Why Come to Eagle Leather for a Helmet Fitting?
Our staff is trained to help with helmet fitting and can help you compare head shape, size, pressure points and retention across different models. Inventory changes daily, but Eagle Leather consistently carries many hundreds of helmets—often approaching 1,000 units—across half-shell, open-face, modular, adventure and full-face styles. That selection gives you the opportunity to compare brands and internal shapes instead of relying on a size label alone.
For such an important piece of riding gear, we encourage you to visit Eagle Leather for an in-person fitting before selecting a size without trying the helmet on.

The EXO-R430 helmet continues to set a new standard for Scorpion EXO®’s full face street helmets at a very competitive price point. The advanced polycarbonate shell is more aerodynamic and smaller resulting in an ultra lightweight SNELL-approved helmet. The EXO-R430 now features our new Elliptec™ faceshield with a latching shield locking mechanism located in the lower center of the shield. This makes the faceshield more secure and provides a tighter seal against the gasket. The faceshield can be easily removed without tools, and the EverClear® No-Fog coating helps keep your vision clear in cold and damp environmental conditions. The KwikWick® C liner is moisture wicking, anti-microbial, quick drying and can be easily removed and is machine washable. The Shoei J Cruise 3 is a premium open face touring helmet designed to give riders an expansive field of view, excellent airflow, refined aerodynamics, and the convenience of a built in sun visor. It is especially well suited to touring, commuting, scooter riding, and warm weather travel where open face freedom and serious engineering both matter.
Purpose built open face shell
The Advanced Integrated Matrix shell combines fiberglass and organic fibers to create a strong structure with controlled elasticity. Shoei shapes the shell in multiple sizes to reduce unnecessary bulk across the size range. A multi density EPS liner manages impact energy while also providing channels for ventilation.
Wind tunnel developed aerodynamics
Shoei used extensive wind tunnel testing to control lift, drag, and turbulence around the open face design. The integrated rear spoiler and smooth shell contours help keep the helmet stable in the moving air created by upright and touring motorcycles.
Major ventilation improvement
The redesigned upper ventilation system delivers substantially more airflow than the previous J Cruise generation. Shoei reports up to 70 percent greater ventilation performance. Multiple intake ports feed EPS channels that move cooling air over the head, while rear exhaust ports release warm, humid air.
CJ 2 shield system
Wide, tall shield provides generous coverage and peripheral vision
Optically accurate curvature helps minimize visual distortion
Secure sealing and locking design helps control wind and weather
Tool free shield removal simplifies cleaning and replacement
Pinlock ready for compatible anti fog protection
QSV 2 internal sun visor
The enlarged internal sun visor provides about 5 millimeters more coverage than the earlier design and meets the demanding optical requirements of the EN1836 standard. An external slider makes it easy to deploy or retract with a gloved hand. The sun visor stores inside a dedicated space so protective EPS thickness is maintained.
Premium interior and fit tuning
The fully removable and washable interior uses moisture managing fabric and a three dimensional shape for secure support. Shoei’s top pocket system allows additional fit adjustment at the crown. Replaceable cheek pads and center pads make it possible to refresh or fine tune the fit over time.
Communication ready
The Shoei Comlink interface is designed for clean integration with the optional Sena SRL3 communication system. Speakers, microphone, battery, and controls can be positioned with minimal external bulk.

Fit and Use Notes
The Strobe II uses an intermediate oval interior shape. Measure around the widest part of your head just above the eyebrows and compare that measurement with the LS2 size chart before ordering. A new helmet should fit evenly snug without creating painful pressure points.
Charge and pair the Y80 before your first ride. Phone compatibility and voice assistant functions depend on the connected device. The headset is water resistant but should not be submerged. Follow the included helmet and headset instructions before removing the comfort liner or electronic components for cleaning.

Description
Although it may look unassuming, the Pit Boss is anything but a rudimentary cruiser helmet. With a removable neck curtain, internal sun shade, and comfortable fit thanks to the adjustable Speed Dial fit system, this lightweight helmet offers heavy-duty capabilities.
Looks can be deceiving. At first glance our Pit Boss may look like many other half-helmets in the cruiser category. Scratch the surface, though, and you'll discover quality that sets it above the competition: A lightweight TriMatrix (carbon/Kevlar/fiberglass composite) shell, an innovative Speed Dial fit system that prevents the "lift and slippage" plaguing most other half-helmets, a drop-down internal shield in Dark Smoke that provides on the fly protection from the sun, and a removable neck curtain offering cold weather protection and speaker pockets for a convenient way to add audio enhancement. Snug the Pit Boss onto your head and thumb the starter button - one ride will confirm the Pit Boss as the King of the Road. Availability, certification, color, and pricing may vary per region. If outside of the USA, please check with your authorized local dealer for more information.
Features:
Lightweight, TriMatrix composite shell—Kevlar/Carbon/Fiberglass blend
Innovative Speed Dial™ adjustable fit system
Internal Sun Shade offers “on the fly” protection from the sun
Removable neck curtain for cold weather riding
Convenient speaker pockets make it easy to set up the Pit Boss with communication devices

Frequently Asked Questions About Motorcycle Helmets
Which motorcycle helmet style is right for me?
The best helmet style depends on your riding, comfort preferences, and desired coverage. Full-face helmets include a fixed chin bar and provide the most coverage. Modular helmets have a chin bar that opens for convenience during stops. Open-face helmets cover the top, back, and sides of the head while leaving the face exposed. Half helmets provide the least coverage and the most open riding experience. Whichever style you choose, proper fit is essential.
Is a modular helmet as safe as a full face helmet?
Both modular and full-face helmets can meet recognized safety standards, but certification does not mean that every helmet provides identical protection. A full-face helmet has a fixed chin bar, while a modular helmet uses a hinged chin bar that opens for convenience when stopped. Construction, certification, fit, and features vary by model, so compare the specifications of each helmet rather than judging by helmet style alone.
Unless the helmet’s manufacturer specifically approves riding with the chin bar open, keep it fully closed and securely latched while riding. The right choice depends on your preferred balance of coverage, convenience, fit, weight, and features.
How do I choose the right motorcycle helmet size for my child?
Choose a youth helmet according to the child’s current head measurement and shape—not age or anticipated growth. Measure around the widest part of the head, approximately one inch above the eyebrows, and compare the measurement with the sizing chart for the specific helmet.
The helmet should feel evenly snug without painful pressure points. When you gently move it from side to side, the child’s skin should move with the liner instead of the helmet rotating independently. Fasten the chin strap and confirm that the helmet cannot roll forward or lift off the head.
Do not purchase an oversized helmet to leave room for growth. A loose helmet can move out of position and may not provide its intended protection. Because fit varies between brands and models, we recommend bringing your child to Eagle Leather’s Lakewood store for an in-person fitting.
Can I replace the face shield on my helmet?
Many motorcycle helmets have replaceable face shields, but shields are model-specific and are not universally interchangeable—even between helmets from the same brand. Before purchasing one, confirm your helmet’s exact brand, model and, when applicable, model generation.
Replace a shield if scratches, cracks, cloudiness or distortion interfere with clear vision, or if its mounting components no longer operate securely. Clear, tinted, mirrored and Pinlock-compatible options vary by helmet. Tinted shields can reduce glare during daylight riding but may not be suitable or legal for nighttime or low-visibility conditions.
If you are unsure which shield fits, bring your helmet to Eagle Leather’s Lakewood store. We can identify the compatible shield and help you understand how its removal and installation system works.
What does DOT certification on a motorcycle helmet mean?
A DOT label means the helmet’s manufacturer certifies that the helmet complies with Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard No. 218, the U.S. standard covering requirements such as impact attenuation, penetration resistance, retention-system performance and labeling.
NHTSA does not test and approve each helmet before it is sold. Manufacturers certify their own helmets, while NHTSA tests selected helmets for compliance and can require corrective action or a recall when a helmet fails.
Some helmets also carry ECE or Snell certification. These standards use different testing and certification programs and can provide additional information when comparing helmets, but they do not replace the DOT certification required for motorcycle helmets sold for on-road use in the United States. Always check the certifications listed for the specific helmet, and remember that certification does not replace proper fit.
Is a motorcycle helmet required by law in Washington?
Yes. Washington generally requires motorcycle, motor-driven-cycle and moped operators and passengers to wear a motorcycle helmet on public roads. The helmet must carry the manufacturer’s certification that it complies with U.S. Department of Transportation requirements, and its neck or chin strap must be securely fastened while the vehicle is moving.
When operating one of these vehicles without a windshield, the rider must also wear qualifying glasses, goggles or a face shield. Washington law also prohibits transporting a child under five years old on a motorcycle or motor-driven cycle.
The statute contains limited exceptions for certain enclosed vehicles and antique motor-driven cycles. Requirements can change, so consult RCW 46.37.530 for the current law. Helmet and eye-protection laws may differ when riding outside Washington.
