Why Cooling Gear is Important.

Why Cooling Gear is Important.

Mike Toursal

Last week we talked about protective gear that could help keep you cool in hot weather. This week let’s look at more gear to keep you cool. Cooldanna head and neck ties contain non-toxic polymer crystals that activate when you soak them in cold water for ten minutes. Then they provide hours of coolness whether you’re riding or doing other outdoor activities.

Minimize The Risk of Catching Covid 19...

Minimize The Risk of Catching Covid 19...

Mike Toursal

SAFETY TIP There’s a lot of false information circulating about Covid 19, the novel coronavirus. On MedPage Today a noted pathologist, Judy Melinek, M.D. grades various means of minimizing your risk. Given an A+ are: Don’t shake hands, hug, or kiss when you greet people. The virus is spread by close personal contact, so keep that to a minimum. Get a flu vaccination. Since the symptoms are similar, if you’ve had a flu shot and have those symptoms, doctors can test you right away to see if you have Covid 19 and, if you do, give you proper treatment. Wash your hands thoroughly with soap and rinse well. The lipid layer that surrounds the virus makes it susceptible to soap—and that’s even more effective than hand sanitizers. Rating A are: Take off your shoes when you come inside. There’s some evidence that Covid 19 can be spread through the feces of infected people, so you don’t want to track that inside. But even if there’s no danger of that, you may well be tracking in germs that cause nasty things like gastroenteritis. Use a handkerchief or your sleeve to on doorknobs and then push the door with your shoulder. The major of New York suggested using a tissue when pushing an elevator button. Check out the website (https://www.medpagetoday.com/blogs/working-stiff/85241) for more good information. These are habits that will help keep you safe from many kinds of diseases. One thing the good doctor rates D is “Don’t touch your face.” It’s like trying not to think of pink elephants—pretty much impossible. So keep your hands clean so that when you do touch your face, you’re not smearing on germs.

How To Make That New Year's Resolution Stick?

How To Make That New Year's Resolution Stick?

Eagle Leather

The best New Year’s resolutions are ones we can keep. That means, first of all, that the resolution should be in line with our core values. Look beyond the exterior and consider what really matters most to you. Motivational speakers call this “Knowing Your Why.” Sometimes, it has a lot to do with the way you think about your resolution. Consider the difference between these two resolutions: "I will lose twenty pounds" versus "I will eat healthy meals so I can enjoy playing touch football with my kids (or grandkids)." Superficial resolutions won’t carry us through the temptations and the daily grind. Resolutions that are in accord with our own deepest, most passionate, desires will. Specific resolutions are much more apt to “take” than vague ones. So, we can improve the resolution to “eat healthy meals” by naming some specific, step-by-step goals. Maybe we’d resolve to limit desserts to two a week or have a meatless Monday or add one more serving of vegetables every day. And then, once you’ve decided on a resolution, write it down and put it in a place where it will remind you of your goal. In our example, you might put it on the refrigerator door. Specific resolutions should always have way to measure progress. That can be as simple as a progress chart, or as complicated as before and during and after pictures. You can also find apps to record progress. You measure progress not to lament any failures, but because doing so encourages you to continue when the going is rough or you’re bored with it. Set up a cheering squad. Let your friends and family know about your resolution and tell them of your successes. Similarly, if some people in your life will be unhelpful, arrange your schedule to see them less often. Your cheering squad can also hold you accountable, so include a trainer if you need one. In our example, you can ask your doctor for nutritional advice. Some insurance policies include free nutritional counseling so you can get a regularly scheduled pep talk. Don’t try to do too much at once. Set small, reasonable goals. Once you’ve mastered that goal and developed a habit, then move on to the next small step. Remember that it takes time to develop new habits, so concentrate on what you are actually doing, not on whether or not you’ve succeeded today. If you goof, don’t beat yourself up over it. In our example, rather than spend a lot of time fretting that you missed meatless Monday, use that time to plan a meatless meal for next week. Since your resolution comes, at its heart, from your deepest values, from what your recognize as your own best self, you can expect real changes in your life. They may begin subtly as you take small step after small step, but they will (maybe sooner than you think) have immense impact. Somehow, the universe has a way of magnifying those things we pay attention to, for good or ill. Good luck with New Year’s resolutions and feel free to share them with the Eagle Leather community on our Facebook page!

What's On Your Gift List?

Damien Heenan

Nowadays we’re still eating turkey sandwiches and leftover green bean casserole when it’s time to start shopping for holiday gifts. We’ve put together a few ideas for the men on your list, whether or not they are motorcycle enthusiasts.Let’s start with jackets. He’ll be safer riding in the Eagle Reflective jacket. Made of soft, naked cowhide, this jacket has reflective piping across the chest and back so it’s easier to see at night. The full-sleeve, zip-out liner lets him zip it out when its warm and keep it in when it’s cold. The zipper-controlled venting system in front and back lets air flow around his body for a more comfortable ride in warm weather. The action back, stretch panel sides, and Velcro adjustment straps at the waist all add to fit and comfort. The snap-closure mandarin collar is stylish. The jacket has two zipper-closure handwarmer pockets; inside are both a zip-closure and a snap-closure pocket. For ordinary wear, consider the Indiana Jacket, shown here in whiskey. It’s made of sleek cowhide in classic style. It has two front pockets and on interior pocket, which snaps closed. The sleeve is fully lined and the liner can be zipped out in warm weather. The fold collar and overall stylishness make this a jacket he can wear anywhere. Eagle Leather carries this sleeveless denim shirt in denim blue, black, royal blue, and red. It’s made entirely of cotton denim, so it’s light and comfortable. The large, single panel in the back is just made for artwork. It has a single-zip closure, blacked-out side pockets that also zip closed and two snap-closed chest pockets. Inside are two conceal-carry pockets.Waterproof gloves are essential for riding in our Pacific Northwest weather. These gloves are made of aniline leather. The breathable inner liner means they are more comfortable to wear in warm weather, so they’re less apt to be left at home. These gloves are waterproof. A stretch panel across the knuckles adds flexibility.Eagle Leather is chock-full of great gifts for the men on your list. Our expert sales staff can give you lots of ideas and you’ll find some marvelous discounts—Black Friday is the kickoff. Most men can always use another belt. This Spy Gadget Could Save Your Bike - Eagle Leather

This Spy Gadget Could Save Your Bike

Eagle Leather

Kryptonite RealTime GPS: Secure Your Bike from Near and Far The Kryptonite RealTime System Takes Motorcycle Security to Another Level Everbody loves a good spy movie. When James Bond uses one of his spy gadgets to outsmart his enemies, we all secretly wish we could do the same. Well, recent advancements in technology are making spy gadgets a reality for the everyday person. From the Apple iWatch to self-parking cars, everyone's life can have a little spy action. That goes for motorcyclists too. We had a customer come in recently and tell us something terrible: his bike had been stolen, and the police could not locate it. Our hearts went out to him - just the thought of your bike, your freedom, being taken from you is enough to give you a pit in your stomach. But the truth is that it happens all the time. 56,000 motorcycles are stolen per year—nearly six bikes per hour and $370 million in monetary damages. To make matters worse, only 25-30% of these stolen bikes are ever recovered. So it's a good idea to prepare yourself for anything, and what better way to do that than with a spy gadget? Okay, so it's not really a spy gadget—but it might as well be! We're talking about the new Kryptonite RealTime GPS Security System. It's small enough to hide discreetly on your bike, made to look like an OEM part, and it is just awesome. Now, you might be thinking, "a motorcycle alarm is hardly a spy gadget." But the Kryptonite system is not a motorcycle alarm. It's a full-on security system - it has a GPS built into it that syncs with a control panel on any web enabled device. You can see where your bike is located 24/7 just by checking your smartphone, tablet or computer. Here is How it Works RealTime uses GPS satellite technology—just like the one your navigation system uses. Once you install the Kryptonite RealTime device, you will gain access to a simple online control panel. This control panel will tell you exactly where your motorcycle is, to the street name and address of its location. And don't worry about a thief disconnecting your battery; the RealTime Motorcycle GPS has a back up battery, and it will even notify you in the control panel when the battery is getting low.        The Kryptonite RealTime Motorcycle Security System comes equipped with the following features: Real-time GPS security and tracking Simple, easy to use, web-based control panel allows owners to instantly locate and control their vehicle through any computer, smartphone or tablet Compact and discreet—made to look like an OEM part Vibration, water and heat resistant Easy to install and configure, takes about 30 minutes Alarm, low battery, fall over, towing/movement and speeding notifications Real-time tracking with geofence capability Only draws 4mA (doesn't drain battery) No monthly fees, one year service included (300 locates) Yearly renewal fee lower than most systems charge per month ($39.00 per year) We are super excited about this product, and we want everyone to know about it. The last thing we want is another customer coming into the store telling about about a stolen bike. So if you want to secure your bike the way James Bond would, you can purchase the Kryptonite RealTime GPS Security System at Eagle Leather or on EagleLeather.com. Why Do Riders Wear Black? - Eagle Leather

Why Do Riders Wear Black?

Eagle Leather

Why Black? Read on to learn why motorcycle leather is beloved in black! We at Eagle Leather are excited to celebrate the holidays with all our friends and family members in the riding community. One of the big events we prepare for every year around this time is our annual Black Friday event. We’re busy preparing for it now—and more details are coming soon—but the phrase “Black Friday” got us thinking. Yeah – we know what the phrase means in the retail sense, but we couldn’t help but think about how, as a motorcycle gear store, most of our leather is black—so every Friday can be “Black” Friday at Eagle Leather. It’s a bad pun, we know. And we’re only joking—but it still got us thinking more… why is motorcycle leather mostly black? How did black become so ubiquitously associated with the riding community? Our curiosity got the better of us, so we dug around to find out—and what we learned was pretty cool! In Western culture, black is a color associated with mourning. We see it as early as ancient Roman times, when men in mourning wore black togas. But it’s not a world-wide custom. In India, for example, mourners wear white. Medieval European royalty wore white for mourning. The shift to black was gradual and reached its peak during Victorian times. Even before the Romans, the ancient Greeks and Egyptians associated the color black with the underworld. The Egyptian afterlife was a happy place (for good people), and the color black had positive connotations of life and protection. But for the Greeks, this meant black was tied to the horrors of Hades, and this sense of evil affects how we “see” black. We tend to be ambivalent about the color black. It’s associated with evil—the color of the devil—but also with power. As soon as long-lasting colorfast black dyes were available, black became a very fashionable color, associated with sophistication and wealth. In recent times, from the Beatniks of the 50s to the Goths of today, black symbolizes independence and rebellion. Are any of these subtle, often contradictory, meanings why motorcycle enthusiasts prefer black gear? Maybe. But the more commonly accepted reason isn’t “woo-woo” or symbolic. It’s strictly practical. When people started riding motorcycles, they had to do a lot of their own repairs. The first machines were not as reliable as we would expect today, and if a rider broke down, there was not quick access to a repair shop. So, because those early riders were likely to be tackling oily, greasy, dirty repairs, they wore black to hide the grime. The answer is really that simple! Keep an eye out for information on our annual Black Friday event! And wear your black leathers proudly!
