Thanksgiving Day falls on November 28 this year. Before we get to some activities on the great day itself, we’d like to mention the 34th Annual Mary Bridge Children’s Hospital Toy Run. It will set out from Destination Harley Davidson on the Saturday after Thanksgiving Day—that’s November 30. Registration begins at 11:00 a.m.; kickstands up at 1:00 p.m. The ride is being organized by the Vietnam Vets Legacy Vets MC. All riders are welcome. To join the ride, bring a child’s toy or a suggested donation of $20.00. Together, we can make a child’s holiday season a little more joyful.
As you read about the events in Tacoma—and we don’t have space for all of them—think about organizations in your neck of the woods that offer similar opportunities for family fun and service. We’d love to read about them on the Eagle Leather Facebook page.
For over a century the Rescue Mission has been helping people in the Tacoma area. This year they helped over two thousand men, women, and children. They helped hundreds of people find work and stable housing. They provide shelter for families in need and have special shelter space for veterans. The Mission served over 300,000 meals. This year, the folks at the Rescue Mission would like you or your children or grandchildren to color a Thanksgiving placemat to be used at the Thanksgiving meal. The placemat is a way to show people who are in dire need that our community cares about them. Just download the placemat here, color it, and mail it to (or drop it off at) 425 South Tacoma Way Tacoma, WA 98402. Find other ways to volunteer or donate here. One way to ease the guilt over Thanksgiving Day indulgence is with a run. The Tacoma City Turkey Trot includes a one-mile race and a 5K for adults and a 1K for children. You can run or walk—or do some of each. You can even push your baby stroller.
The one-mile race begins at 8:30 a.m. at the corner of N. 26th St. and N. Bennett St. The 5K starts at 9:00 a.m. and the 1K begins at 10:15 a.m. Both of those races begin and end at the Fleet Feet Sports store. Parents may run with their children in the 1K and they do not have to register to do so. You can pre-register or you can register on race day—if the race is not sold out. Race day registration fees are: $15.00 for the kids 1K; $50.00 for the 5K; and $45.00 for the one-mile race.
Registrants each get a packet. You can pick them up ahead of time, and this is recommended to avoid long lines on race day. You can pick up packets for other people as long as you have their permission. Get packets from 2:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. on Wednesday, November 27 or on Thursday from 7:00 a.m. until 8:15 for the one-mile or until 8:45 for the other two races at Tacoma City Marathon Association, 3812 N. 26th St. Partnering charities for the Tacoma City Turkey Trot include The Children’s Fund, which provides scholarships so abused and neglected children can participate in cultural, educational, and social experiences such as football camp and dance classes, and FISH Food Bank.
You might see Eagle Leather staff at some of these events, because the Eagle Leather store will be closed on Thanksgiving Day. We’ll open at little early—at 8:00 a.m.—on Friday and then almost every item in the store will be on sale. Discounts will start at 10 percent and go all the way up to 50 percent. Come on in and find the doorbusters! You know you want to.
