Motorcycle Helmet Laws
A Quick Overview on Washington State Legislature RCW 46.37.530

A few weeks ago, we posted a story on motorcycle helmet laws, noting the differences from state to state. Here is some more detailed information about helmet laws in our home state of Washington.

The state of Washington requires all riders, regardless of age or experience, to wear a helmet that is US DOT certified. Washington State Legislature RCW 46.37.530 outlines several other requirements for motorcycle riders:

1. All motorcycles must be equipped with mirrors on the left and right sides unless it is 25+ years old and being ridden in conjunction with an antique or classic motorcycle event, or if it was manufactured prior to 1931.

1. Riders must use state-patrol-adopted glasses, goggles, or a face-shield if their motorcycle does not have a windshield.

1. Motorcycle neck or chin straps must be securely fastened while the motorcycle is in motion.

1. Riders may not transport a child under the age of five on a motorcycle.

1. It is unlawful to sell a motorcycle helmet that does not meet minimum state requirements set forth in Section 3 of RCW 46.37.530.
