How to connect heated clothing.

Mohamed Toursal

It’s easy to get a little confused about heated gear—what item does what and how do they all work alone and together. This week, we’ll try to answer those questions as they relate to Gerbing brand gear. Think about the old campfire song about the toe bone connected to the foot bone connected to the leg bone and so on.

Care for your Heated Clothing.

Mohamed Toursal

Heated clothing uses electricity, so it’s important for your own safety to follow the care instructions. These are gleaned from Gerbing’s website. Never dry clean your heated gear. And don’t throw it in the washer, either. Hand wash only.

Take Good Care of Your Heated Gear

Eagle Leather

Getting the Most out of Your Heated Gear Extend Your Riding Season through Winter! Heated gear can give weeks—even months—of comfortable riding. At Eagle Leather, we think it’s worth every penny. But it isn’t cheap. And that means it’s worth your time to get the most benefit from your heated gear. Your gear might include a jacket liner or vest, pants liners, heated insoles or socks, or heated gloves or glove liners. Old-fashioned heated gear relied on copper wires, which heat up due to resistance when electricity passes through them. Newer gear uses more sophisticated technology, such as Gerbing’s Microwire®. It’s lighter, more reliable, and more evenly distributes the heat. Heated liners are meant to be worn under windproof top layers so the heat is retained and not blown away in the wind. What might not be so obvious is that you also need a layer of clothing between the heated gear and your skin. This layer doesn’t have to be thick. It serves two purposes: It can keep you from being burned if there’s a hot spot in your gear and it keeps the dirt and oils of your body off your heated gear. Sandwiched as it is between the wind-proof outer layer and the inner layer, your gear will stay clean and daisy-fresh. Some riders can actually go years between washings. When you do wash your gear, keep it out of the washer and the dryer. Instead, wash it in cold water in the sink or in a tub using gentle hands and a mild soap like Woolite®, rinse it twice in clear, cold water, and then air dry. Your gear is designed to put out a lot of heat—more than you’ll need most days. The gear is always on maximum output and can easily put out enough heat to make you really uncomfortable. So, get a heat controller, which controls the gear’s on and off switch. When you need just a warm-up, set the controller at its lowest setting and it will cycle every few seconds, keeping the gear off more than it’s on. Set the heat controller for higher temperatures and it will change the timing within the cycles so the gear is left on (heating) longer. Unlike other gear, heated gloves are meant to be stand-alone, worn next to the skin without an outer layer. Such gloves have their own insulated layer, something thin and flexible such as Thinsulate™. Your heated jacket liner has clips at the cuff that connect to and power your gloves. If you don’t have a heated jacket or liner, you can get a Y-harness that will hang in your sleeves and carry power to the gloves. Any heated gear must have the right fit. Your gear should be snug but not tight, leaving room under it for an extra layer (or at least a layer of air) between your skin and the gear. Your gear should be lightweight and limber, so you can stay agile on your motorcycle. With the minimum of care, your investment in heated gear will last for years, giving you many weeks and many hundreds of miles of comfortable riding. Our well-trained staff at Eagle Leather can help you find the heated gear that’s right for you—with the right fit.

All About Mobile Warming

All About Mobile Warming

Eagle Leather

You know Eagle Leather loves Gerbing products for heated gear. Now we’ve added items that use a different technology and can be used on or off your motorcycle. This new gear is great for skiing, hunting, hiking, ice fishing—all winter pursuits. It also makes riding your motorcycle fun again, whether you’re riding for pleasure or commuting.   Mobile Warming® gear uses layers. Three heating panels are lined with ultra-fine, steel-alloy-fiber elements sandwiched under insulating and reflecting layers to keep heat close to your body. The system is powered by a rechargeable, portable, lithium-ion battery. For garments with temperature control, you can adjust the power output to maximize battery life.   This gear is easy to use. Just connect the battery pack to the input cable inside the hand packet. Press the on/off button and hold for a few seconds. When the LED light comes on, the system is heating. If the light doesn’t come on, the battery needs to be recharged. Start with the setting at 100% and keep it there for the five to ten minutes it takes to warm up. Then turn it down. Fifty percent is good for a day outdoors in mild weather, but you’ll need more oomph when it’s really cold. When you go inside, turn it off to save battery time. All this gear comes with the battery and a wall-plug charger.   Take a look at the Mobile Warming® Longman Shirt. It has a four-way-stretch base layer for flexibility and fits nicely under your jacket. It uses a 7.4-volt battery.   Or, you might opt for a jacket like the Men’s Alpine Jacket. Windshark® softshell construction makes this jacket windproof and water resistant. It has four heat settings for efficiency and comfort and also uses a 7.4-volt battery.   Dual-Power Jackets like the ladies’ version here give two options. You can connect to your motorcycle’s 12-volt battery or use the gear’s own lithium-ion battery. You can use the 12-volt option while riding and turn to the 12-volt lithium battery when you’re doing other outdoor stuff. Again, Windshark® construction will help keep you warm and dry. Dual-power pants (like these for men) and gloves connect to the jacket wire harness.   The Longman Pant uses a 7.4-volt battery. You wear them under your riding pants. They have the four-way stretch flexibility that keeps you active in the cold.   We’ve also added several styles of Mobile Warming® gloves. The Barra Leather/Textile Heated Gloves is made of premium goatskin leather and Carbolex® nylon and include a 7.4-volt battery for warmth and rugged protection. The gloves have Rainguard®, an advanced waterproofing technology. For exteme weather, you could choose the same glove in a 12-volt version.   Stop by Eagle Leather and ask our sales staff about these and other heated gear options. Don’t let the cold keep you from enjoying the outdoors and your motorcycle!

Heated Gear Safety

Eagle Leather

Safety Tip of the Week Safety First With Heated Gear In the blog, we’ll look at the new Mobile Warming® active-wear heated gear. These are a few things to be careful of: The battery doesn’t last forever. For a full days ride in cold weather, carry a spare. Don’t store the battery below minus four degrees Fahrenheit or above one-forty. Don’t put the gear close to a heat source and keep the battery away from direct flame or heat—otherwise it might explode. Remove the battery and temperature control and machine-wash the garment on gentle or delicate and in warm water with mild detergent and no bleach. Hang to dry without wringing or twisting it. Never tumble-dry in the dryer, iron, or dry clean this gear. See the owner’s manual for other precautions and instructions. Stay safe out there! - Mike

Boo! It's Cold Outside - Eagle Leather

Boo! It's Cold Outside

Ride in Any Weather with Heated GearDon't Let Cold Weather Scare You Off Your Bike this Season You know how frozen you can feel riding a motorcycle in cold weather without heated gear. Imagine flying in an open cockpit plane, in December, leaving from Minneapolis, Minnesota. A pilot tells how a Gerbing's heated jacket plugged into the plane’s cigarette lighter kept him cozy. He wore layers and advises that, when you wear more than one layer and plan to fly for three hours, you should stay away from the coffee. Read the whole story here. You probably don’t pilot open cockpit airplanes, but I bet you ride even when the temperature drops. Here in the Pacific Northwest, we can ride for pleasure or commute via motorcycle most of the year if we have heated gear. At Eagle Leather, we have heated gear from insoles and sock liners, to pants and jackets, to gloves. You can choose heated liners, heated vests, or a full set of heated clothing, depending on how you ride during the colder months. In general, heated gear uses energy from your motorcycle battery. Special filaments convert the electrical energy to heat. Insulation, such as Thinsulate, keeps in the heat. Some items, such as socks and gloves, are available with both a connection to the bike battery and their own 12-volt batteries. You might use the independent battery when you’re hunting ducks from a blind or ice fishing, for instance. Gerbing's heated gear is either all the way on, or off. So, sometimes you get too warm. You can turn the gear off and then plug it in again when you get cold. But that isn’t the safest way to ride. You can be distracted as you turn off the heat to your gear. You might get drowsy when you are too warm, or forget to turn on your gear and get hypothermic. A better solution is a thermostat, an option you can buy at Eagle Leather. Then you can set the temperature you want and forget it. With the right gear, we can ride through the cold months, and we have an added bonus—if we ever want to fly in an open cockpit plane, we’ve got the gear for the trip. We’ve got some brand new Gerbing's heated gear that will extend your motorcycling pleasure well into the winter months. Both the jacket and the pants rely on Gerbing’s Microwire® technology. The micro-sized heating fibers of the Coreheat12 Thermovelocity System are powered by a simple connection to your motorcycle's DC power system. You can connect to your 12-volt accessory outlet with the 12-volt adapter plug or you can correct directly to the motorcycle battery with the battery harness. Both the adapter plug and the harness are included. Gerbing's supports a lifetime warranty on the heating elements. Both jacket and pants are made of 330-denier Cordura for durability, with a polyurethane coating, waterproof zippered pockets and heat-sealed seams to protect you from rain and snow. The jacket and pants integrate, and the pants have a single power distribution at the hem that can connect to heated insoles. The pants have an easy-on design with side leg zippers and protect you with ballistic-grade Cordura and removable CE-rated Knox armor at the knees. reflective strips make you more visible in the dark. Gerbing's has new gloves this year, too, for women and for men. To get the most out of your heated gear, you'll also want to pick up a temperature controller. This dual temp controller can control two items, for example, a jacket liner and gloves on two different settings. You can also add a third item by putting the main body on one setting and the hands on a different setting. If you are just looking for one setting, this single temp controller will do the trick!
