Silas loved the chrome on his motorcycle. Maybe that’s why, when he fell asleep after reading about the knights in shining armor in A Connecticut Yankee in King Arthur’s Court, he dreamed of himself clad in brilliantly polished armor.
He was hurrying home to his castle one night, riding his valiant steed through the countryside, when the horse suddenly collapsed. In the dream, Silas continued on foot, trudging down what felt like an endless road while the heavy armor weighed him down.
At last, he spotted the warm flicker of candlelight in a farmhouse window. When he knocked, a lovely young girl opened the door.
“A horse. I need a horse,” Silas said.
“My father and brothers used our horses to take wheat to the mill,” she replied. “They won’t be home until late tomorrow.”
Silas didn’t know why, but in his dream he was desperate to get home. “What can I do? I need some kind of alternative transportation.”
The girl stepped into a back room. “Sometimes my brother rides this beast,” she said, “but you’d have to take off your armor—or you’d be too heavy.”
She emerged leading an ancient Great Dane with a matted coat and shaking legs. The poor creature wheezed with every breath.
Silas exclaimed, “Surely you wouldn’t send a knight out on a dog like this!”
