We hear that a few ill-mannered motorcyclists caused some problems at a ride through Seattle last week. The organizers of the ride have apologized. Maybe we should all take a moment to think about common sense and common courtesy.
A ride with over three-hundred motorcycles can seem intimidating to motorists, so motorcyclists should take extra care to see that motorists don’t feel pushed to the side.
A ride through an urban area is not the place for wheelies.
Even though the street is crowded with bikes, you should not ride on sidewalks.
Riding against the direction of traffic is both unsafe and illegal.
Blocking streets while large numbers of riders pass is annoying to other people who are using the roads.
If we want to be welcome, as single riders or in groups—large and small—then we should be courteous, careful, and law-abiding. Motorcyclists should be a boon, bringing their custom to local businesses or at least giving residents an interesting parade of vehicles. But a handful of ill-mannered folks can turn that boon into a bane.
