Happy Labor Day from Eagle Leather!
An Opportunity To Advance Your Riding Skills

Labor Day is a celebration of America labor. Oregon was the first state to make it an official holiday, back in 1887. In 1894, Congress made the holiday nationwide.

For a long time, it was thought that Peter J. McGuire first put forth the idea of a day dedicated to American workers. Peter was the general secretary of the Brotherhood of Carpenters and Joiners and one of the founders of the American Federation of Labor (AFL). Others give that honor the Matthew McGuire, a machinist, saying that he proposed it as secretary of the Central Labor Union of New York in 1882. We do know for sure that the Central Labor Union did appoint a committee to set up a picnic.

And we’ve been picnicking and celebrating ever since.

For many families, Labor Day also marks the beginning of the school year. As the young people, from kindergarten to college, return to their jobs of learning, maybe it’s time to think about a refresher class in motorcycling skills.

You have several training programs to choose from in the Tacoma area. Often, if you need a basic course, you can use the school’s motorcycle. Such courses can be a big help to people who often ride pillion. Or maybe you’ve added a sidecar or switched to a trike—there are courses for those, too.

An intermediate riders’ course can be a useful refresher and courses for advanced riders can teach most of us a thing or two. There are special courses for off-road riding, too, and even a multi-day camp where you can learn, not just the basics, but the ins and outs of adventure riding.

In addition to riding courses, you can find courses in motorcycle maintenance, ranging from understanding your bike and how to make simple adjustments, proper care for your motorcycle, and how to winterize it to advanced courses in the systems that operate your motorcycle.

Maybe your motorcycle club would like to take a class together, or maybe you’d like to make it a family affair. You can even find schools that will set up a customized class to cover just the topics you want to learn more about.

Now that summer is drawing to an end, and the kids are going back to school, consider taking a few hours—or a few days—to advance your motorcycling skills.
