We all love our trusty heated gear to keep us warm on those cooler days. Now that the weather is improving, it’s time to start putting it away for the summer. But don't put it away until you check to see if your Gerbing’s heated jacket liner is recalled!
Gerbings is recalling 9,900 black nylon, 12-volt, heated jacket liners due to defective wire connectors. An incorrectly crimped connector in the heating element in the back portion of the liner is susceptible to overheating. This can cause damage to the jacket and in some cases, to the wearer.
The liners heat up when plugged into any motor vehicle. “Gerbing’s Heated Clothing” or “Harley Davidson” is printed on the front-left chest of the jacket liners. Affected liners with the “Gerbing’s Heated Clothing” imprint have model number JKLN and PO# 3796. Affected liners with the “Harley Davidson” imprint have model number 98324-09VM and GM32873, GM32874, GM34188, GM34189, GM34190, or GM34191. The model number, PO number, and “Use only 12 Volts” are printed on a label sewn on the inside next to the jacket liner’s front zipper.
A full heated jacket or liner will usually have battery-operated heating elements throughout the entire garment, including the collar. The jacket or liner will be the central power source for all other heated garments connected to it and should be dual-wired so that all connected garments can be set to a different temperature than the jacket/liner itself. A liner is thinner and meant to be worn underneath a regular riding jacket. The connectors for heated gloves are located at the sleeve cuffs on both jackets and liners.
The recalled liners were sold at Harley Davidson dealerships, sporting goods retail stores, and motorcycle shops (including Eagle Leather) from April 2011 through December 2012.
Gerbings is offering a free inspection and repair or replacement of the subject jacket liners, if necessary.
